Caring for Yourself After Your Gastrointestinal Procedure
Thank you for choosing Dr. Vanitha Bala and her team for your gastrointestinal care. Following your procedure, it is important to follow these instructions to ensure a safe recovery and optimal results. While most patients recover quickly after endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopy or upper endoscopy (EGD), mild side effects are common and usually resolve within a short period.
Immediately After Your Procedure
Because sedation is commonly used during gastrointestinal procedures, you may feel drowsy, tired, or less alert for several hours afterward. A responsible adult should drive you home and remain available to assist you if needed.
For the remainder of the day, please avoid:
- Driving or operating machinery
- Signing legal documents
- Drinking alcohol
- Making important decisions
- Performing strenuous physical activities
Most patients can resume their normal activities the following day unless otherwise instructed.
Diet and Hydration
You may resume eating and drinking as directed by your provider. Start with light meals and gradually return to your regular diet as tolerated.
To support recovery:
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated
- Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods if they cause discomfort
- Follow any special dietary instructions provided after your procedure
- Continue taking medications as directed unless instructed otherwise
If you underwent a colonoscopy, mild bloating or gas discomfort may occur due to the air used during the examination. Walking can help relieve these symptoms.
What Symptoms Are Normal?
After a colonoscopy or upper endoscopy, it is common to experience:
- Mild bloating
- Passing gas
- Mild abdominal cramping
- Temporary sore throat after an upper endoscopy
- Mild fatigue from sedation
These symptoms generally improve within 24 hours.

- Black or tarry stools
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Fainting or loss of consciousness
Although complications are uncommon, prompt medical evaluation is important if these symptoms occur.
Biopsy and Test Results
